FIONNA C AITCHISON REID

Fionna is a building and construction lawyer, working since 2002 as a construction lawyer for subcontractors, trade contractors and developers and working as a building lawyer for homeowners. Fionna is our director and principal solicitor at Aitchison Reid Building and Construction Lawyers.
For homeowners, Fionna combines an empathy and understanding of a homeowner’s position, with a technical understanding of the domestic building legislation and QBCC Statutory Home Warranty Insurance.
Passionate about security of payment and a vocal advocate for the rights of subbies and tradies to get paid, Fionna understands how to make business processes, contracts and legislation work for our clients.
Our practice provides dispute advice and litigation services, however Fionna is focussed on helping clients to protect themselves before disputes and payment issues occur, so that their chances of success are increased. Having a strong litigation background is invaluable to Fionna's work and leadership in the front end part of our practice which focusses on contract drafting, contract review and contract advice.
Very much a part of the building and construction industry from the beginning, Fionna is the first person to complete co-joint Building Science and Law degrees in New Zealand, is the co-founder of Women in Building and Construction group established in 2015 and is a NAWIC (QLD) award winner for 2016. Fionna is one of four eminent professionals appointed by Minister Mick de Brenni to serve on the Building Industry Fairness Reforms Implementation and Evaluation Panel. The Panel is tasked to assess and evaluate the implementation of the Building Industry Fairness (Security of Payment) Act 2017.
Having been brought up in a family surrounded by construction due to her parents being Wellington-based developers, the building and construction industry has been a part of Fionna's life from the beginning.
Outside the legal profession, Fionna has a variety of personal and business interests including art and painting, is a mum to two children who she loves to bits and enjoys hanging out with and is married to Riley.

Riley is co-owner (with Fionna) and manager of our practice, with focus areas on risk management, information systems and security. Riley has Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
Outside the law practice, Riley has a variety of personal and business interests, loves helicopters, is a dad to two children who he thinks are choice as and is married to Fionna.
